We often assume a one size fits all approach when trying to build relationships with our youngsters. Experience teaches us that this method presents a challenge especially when trying to connect with “hard-to-reach youth. Given that they possesses unique needs, we, as a caregivers, teachers, or parents, bare the responsibility of discovering more about the context of their behavior. When is it most difficult to communicate with your youngster? How often does he or she withdraw from social interaction? When does your youngster appear to be most engaged? Though the answers to these and other critical questions may take time to discover, be encouraged. Once you gain this valuable insight to their behavior, you’ll be well on your way to building harmonious relationships with your youngsters.
